Just outside of Carpentras and close to Mont Ventoux, this hotel is popular with Tour de France followers. It sprawls across seven luxuriously restored medieval stone houses – almost a third of the village – linked by a cobbled courtyard and a terraced Italian garden. This setting, on a steep hillside, makes for a lot of up and down but also stunning views. Little luxuries include Provençal toiletries in the sumptuous bathrooms, fluffy white bathrobes and English-language newspapers with breakfast. Fabulous food is served in the elegant restaurant or more casual Bistro and, during the autumn and spring the chef holds cooking classes for guests. Packages also include visits to wineries and private estates. This place is a real knockout. If you plan to give yourself a brief treat, you can’t go wrong with a night or two here. Ask about the town’s Mechanical Music Museum before you leave.
